Song Doc is a busy fisheries trading port located in South Vietnam. Although local incomes are high, the town’s evolution from a commune means it lacks many amenities associated with a modern township. The project objective is to develop a precinct masterplan within the town to catalyse further public and private socio-economic development. The plan will provide housing options, social infrastructure, recreation and entertainment venues for local residents. In addition it seeks to boost local economic and employment opportunities within supplementary industries supporting the fishing sector.
As well as achieving socio-economic aims, opportunity exists to acknowledge the historic contribution of fishing to the local cultural landscape; and to incorporate the existing land typology’s interconnecting network of canals which are so typical of the delta regions. This enables not only practical amenity such as recreational spaces and an adaptive surface water management strategy, but also builds on local customs and traditions to create a unique identity for the town.
